"Reviewing the Past in Digital Art - Circa 1990's"

Freehand Drawn - Computer Colored

Freehand Plus KPT Collection

Scanned in Dot Matrix Printout

Again I have displayed some "Vintage" circa 1990 and earlier Digital Artworks. I am Sharing these as I update my PC and OS. Less time for creating newer images.

All of these have some freehand drawing to them, fictional women in bright color or Dot Matrix printout form. Some come from Journals I kept and then scanned in to manipulate in computer programs.

Not much time today to explain workflow, most of which is forgotten anyway! I am pretty certain I used some version of Corel Products for the color images. That's about it.

When I get more time I will probably begin creating New Works for your enjoyment, until then Old times are rolling!

"Grunge 12-String Guitar with Chords" Corel - Plus

Grunge 12-String Guitar with Chords

Back to the 12-String Guitar motif, with a Grunge touch. I opened one of my Mayang's Texture with blue and orange color in Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4. There I applied an Impressionist setting with Rough Paper, and a Random brush setting. I auto painted the background. Saving that iteration I opened with Corel PhotoPaint. I rotated to a portrait view.

I took one of my recent photographs of my Seagull S12 Cedar from Picasa 3.9 folder and I copied to the Clipboard. I opened the New from Clipboard in PhotoPaint and cut out the guitar and case. I copied and pasted that onto the portrait textured background.

I adjusted the guitar to fit and used the property Overlay to place it with transparency. I merged that. I next applied the Orange text of guitar chords in a progression I recently have been playing with. I applied the Basketcase Font to the letters. And then applied the Distort, Wet Paint set at 48 for the dripping paint look.

I used the Font WC Rhesus B Bta for the paint splatters in orange and blue on the background and the guitar. I applied Filter Forge's Photo Effects Lomo for the final touch of framing and the darker grunge feel. Adding my signature in white (inverted) I saved that large iteration.

Then I resampled to a display size in PhotoPaint.

"Vintage Gypsy Woman Muse" Corel Painter 11 - Plus

Vintage Gypsy Woman Muse

I picked an image from the Free Vintage Clip Art folks today. It is a "Gypsy Muse," vintage piece. I opened from my Picasa 3.9 folders with Corel PSP Pro X3 and used the Smart Photo Fix on it punching up the color and sharpening the image. I also used the Skin Softening on it for the skin tones.

I applied the Saturation Vibrancy on it and saved it as a display size image. I reopened in Corel Painter 11 and I painted it with differing clone brushes, Soft Clone and Thick Camel brushes. I used a Watercolor brush for the background surrounding the woman.

I used the Soft Cloner for the stringed instrument she is holding so the details would show clearly. I added some line in the background to halo the woman.

I saved that iteration and opened with Corel PhotoPaint. I used Filter Forge's Photo Effects Vibrance. Then I added a film frame with Filter Forge's Frames. I also placed my signature in black and saved that iteration.

Music wise I tuned my 12-String Seagull to standard tuning and have been practicing using some chord progressions I got online that I printed out.

A minor, G major, D minor, and A major chord progressions with differing structures. They were divided between VERSE and CHORUS lines of progression.

I did some recording of my practicing and listened back to them using Audacity and improvising leads. I used a Archtop Jazz Guitar for the rhythm and different leads for some flavor. I found that switching from minor chords to major chords posed some difficulty in my improvisations. All in all I am feeling good to be practicing again.

"Lizzy Spit - In the Spotlight - Artists in the Plus" - Corel

Singer Songwriter Lizzy Spit

I was able to watch a recent "In the Spotlight," with guest, +LIZZY SPIT on YouTube. An interview and some songs were performed by Lizzy. Her musical background was interesting to find out about and her performance of songs was wonderful and delightful.

I used a screen capture of her and opened it in Corel PhotoPaint to crop, afterward I opened that file with Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4. There I selected the Classic Oil Painting setting, with Rough Paper and auto Painted the image. Saving that I opened with PhotoPaint and applied Filter Forge's Frames film frame. I added my signature and saved in display size.

"The Calculus Lesson" Digital Collage - Corel PhotoPaint - Picasa 3

The Calculus Lesson

Today I continue with Digital Collaging for this image, "The Calculus Lesson."

Opening PhotoPaint, I scanned in a print of a painting for the colorful background. I then used KPT Collection's Equalizer feature on it for a Gaussian like blur. I then applied PhotoPaint's Effects, Distort, Wet Paint to the background for the dripping paint illusion.

Browsing with Picasa 3 in my Dover Publications Sampler folder I found the Owls with what looked like a master and his students. I applied the property Subtract to add transparency, keeping some of the color.

I added a few flying creatures, the bird, dragonfly, butterfly, and fly for an outdoorsy appearance. Using the property Multiply for transparency on each and resizing them for this collage.

I then added the final touch, the Calculus equation page, using Multiply, for the Lesson theme.  This also came from Dover Publications.

I saved the large file after adding my signature, and resampled for display.

Troubadour Artisans Three - Dover Woodcut - Painter 11

Troubadour Artisans Three is from a Dover Publications woodcut, I regularly receive samplers from them, and I particularly liked this one.

I opened it in PhotoPaint and resampled it to 128 dpi for size. Saving that I opened it in Painter 11 and selected some Digital Watercolors to paint it with colorful patterns.

I did not do the drawing here at all, so don't give me credit for the woodcut. I only painted it selecting some royal colors for their vibrancy.

It was tedious work but very enjoyable to do, like a coloring book picture only using watercolors.

Fauve Colors Floral - CorelDRAW - CorelTRACE - Painter 11

For this experimental image I selected, while browsing in Picasa 3, one of my Dover Publications floral clip art. I opened with PhotoPaint, then I copied to CorelDRAW and selected to Trace the bitmap in CorelTRACE. I used the outline trace and saved the file as a .CMX file and reopened it in CorelDRAW.

There I ungrouped all the outlined pieces and add some outrageous coloring and gradients, leaving some of the basic colors alone. I regrouped these pieces and copied to the clipboard and pasted into PhotoPaint using File> New from Clipboard>.

As I copied it I increased the size of the image to work on a larger one. I saved this file and opened it with Painter 11. I did a quick clone and selected the Eastern Water Chrysanthemum Wet brush and painted the entire floral with the clone button on.

I then Applied Surface Texture using the Artist Canvas, lightening it up a bit. I selected an Oil brush and two blue colors for the background, which allowed the texture to show through.

Back in PhotoPaint I selected a Painting Frame in Filter Forge, adjusting the width and number of grooves set to one. I saved that file for sharing here.
