Grunge Guitars

For today's image I selected a photograph of our two guitars upright, leaning on the couch. I opened from Picasa 3.9 with Paint.NET and used the Ink Sketch tool on the photograph. I ended up with a pen and ink, black and white, image.

I browsed to my Pictures folder on my external hard drive and went to Mayang's Textures. I selected a metal rust texture and loaded it as another layer. Still in Paint.NET, I resized the texture to fit, used the layer property Multiply, and merged the layers, saving that large iteration. I opened the file in Corel PhotoPaint.

I next went to the Internet to find some fonts of paint splatters that I could use for adding to the grunge look and feel. I found Split, Splat, Splodge and WTC Rhesus TT fonts for free use. I applied the paint splatters, and used the Distort, Wet Paint tool for the drippings. I changed the opacity of the splatters showing the background through them for effect of aged splatters.

I used the Filter Forge Photo Effects plugin for Vibrance to add some punch to the colors. Added my signature in white and resampled for display.

I played my 12-String Seagull last night and practiced for a couple hours. Some new chord progressions and a few tunes. Green Day's "Warning," Coldplay's "Clocks," and Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Lucky Man," (without the synth.) As I get older my calluses don't take long to begin hurting after only a short time, well I blame it on age and FMS.

All in all I really enjoyed my practice on the guitar, and the singing, too.

"Double Drop D Guitar Collage" Corel - Plus

For today's image I created a Guitar Digital Collage in Picasa 3.9. Using the recent photographs of my 12-string Seagull Guitar I selected the photographs and chose Create Collage in Picasa. I switched to the 8X10 portrait setting with a central photograph the Picasa made the large collage from my selections.

It auto saved the draft and I opened the finished collage in Corel PSP Pro X3. There I applied the Smart Photo Fix and loaded the image as another layer. To that the Smart Photo Fix was applied and I used the Pencil tool to create an overlay. I altered the colors to a Psychedelic look and feel. I merged the layers with the enhanced colors. I saved that iteration.

I reopened from Picasa with Corel PhotoPaint. there I used the Wand tool to select the white space and filled with a Stucco filling from their Sample palettes. I added the paint splatters to the image and changed their opacity and added drippings. This was for that Grunge effect.

I then scanned in some blank chord charts, four of them in a group, and added some Double Drop D chord markings. The first chord is played like an Am on the first fret then the second is the same form slid up to the third fret. The next chord is the A shape played on the fifth and seventh frets.

I used the property Multiply as I copied and pasted the chord form onto the guitar background, sizing it large enough to read and using black. I added the Double Drop D Tuning phrase and added the dripping using the Distort, Wet Paint, tool. I merged the chords and phrase into the background.

I saved the large iteration, then on the display size added my signature and saved that with a differing file name.

Vintage Young Girl Playing Violin

I am keeping with a music motif with some Dover Clip Art from my Dover Publications Sampler folder in Picasa 3.9. I selected the "Vintage Young Girl Playing the Violin," and a background of Butterflies in black and green, and some sheet music. I opened them in Corel PhotoPaint and did my cutting, erasing, placing of the Girl on a bed of leaves (also Dover Clip Art) with a Bird accompanying her playing.

I used the Tone Curve to give the Girl and Bird and leaves some depth. I copied and pasted them onto the Butterflies background. On the background I did use Color Replace White to Green for the pleasant coloring. I added the sheet music from the Free Vintage Digital Art folks. which I promptly placed behind the Girl and Bird. I used the property Multiply on the music score.

I did all the work for this Digital Collage in PhotoPaint. I resampled to display size, adding my signature in white (again Inverting the black signature.) I saved the medium size iteration for display.

Musically I have been researching Chordings for Double Drop D Tuning and have found a couple of references with PDF files. Which I downloaded but then lost my page I was on so I can't share the Links.

I may use this tuning for a new song I am working on. The meter of the lyric is very different to what I usually use. So I am going to have to be really creative with the chords and melody and the chorus and verses and bridge. I am excited about it!

Feels great to be thinking and feeling musical again.

Grunge 12-String Guitar with Chords

Back to the 12-String Guitar motif, with a Grunge touch. I opened one of my Mayang's Texture with blue and orange color in Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4. There I applied an Impressionist setting with Rough Paper, and a Random brush setting. I auto painted the background. Saving that iteration I opened with Corel PhotoPaint. I rotated to a portrait view.

I took one of my recent photographs of my Seagull S12 Cedar from Picasa 3.9 folder and I copied to the Clipboard. I opened the New from Clipboard in PhotoPaint and cut out the guitar and case. I copied and pasted that onto the portrait textured background.

I adjusted the guitar to fit and used the property Overlay to place it with transparency. I merged that. I next applied the Orange text of guitar chords in a progression I recently have been playing with. I applied the Basketcase Font to the letters. And then applied the Distort, Wet Paint set at 48 for the dripping paint look.

I used the Font WC Rhesus B Bta for the paint splatters in orange and blue on the background and the guitar. I applied Filter Forge's Photo Effects Lomo for the final touch of framing and the darker grunge feel. Adding my signature in white (inverted) I saved that large iteration.

Then I resampled to a display size in PhotoPaint.

I used Corel PSP Pro X3 for this rendition of the photograph. I applied the Infrared tool and then the Time Machine Daguerreotype tool. I did not know my Wife at this time we met in 1970 and have been together through many difficult times, but our relationship has survived! I have a photograph of us on the About Page from the 70's if you want to take a look.

"Guitar Player 3" Digital Collage - Corel PhotoPaint - Plus

As with other backgrounds I have used lately I started with a colorful Mayang's Texture. I opened with Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4 and again applied the Impressionistic auto paint.

I saved this large file and opened Picasa 3.9. I searched for another Guitar Player image I could scan in and found one. I opened Corel PhotoPaint and scanned it in. Using Little Ink Pot's Thredgeholder I made it like a Ink Sketch halftone. I copied to the clipboard and pasted, erasing unwanted background from it.

I enlarged the Guitar Player to almost fill the image. In Picasa 3.9 I found a circle of multiple guitars and added it with copy and paste. I used the property Subtract for transparency. I also scanned in a grid of a chord progression and turned it on its side for the length of the image. I used the property Multiply for transparency.

I took one of my Jim Dunlop guitar picks and scanned it in and pasted the image onto the piece. I used the property Invert and erased around the pick. I added my signature and saved the large iteration. I added a Desert Blue 40 pixel border, saved again then resampled for display.

"Guitar Player" Digital Collage - Corel PhotoPaint - Plus

Starting with a photograph of eucalyptus bark I opened with Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4 and again applied the Impressionistic auto paint.  I saved that large file. In Picasa 3.9, I browsed for the Guitar Player photograph and opened that with Paint.NET and applied the Ink Sketch tool to it. I also cropped it to fit the lower bottom of the background.

I used some Dover Clip Art of music and the 4/4 time notes and Staff Symbol, enlarging them to 300 dpi. I applied the property Color Burn to all these pieces as I placed them in the composition.

I found some guitar chord diagrams and copied and pasted them from another document. I resized them and used the property Invert. Then I reduced their opacity making them semi transparent.

I merged all to the background and saved that file iteration. I resampled the file for display and saved again.

Grunge Guitar Trio

Getting some advice on the song "Playing In A Vacuum," to highlight another verse, and drop one chorus. Perhaps a change in the Key as well, then back to the original Key.

With the song in mind I worked on a Digital Collage today. It has a grunge background and a trio of guitars. I added a snippet of the song's chords and lyrics using a Typewriter font. In keeping with the grunge theme I added wet paint drippings to the words and some paint splatters.

On the three guitars I applied Little Ink Pot's Thredgeholder for a rough sketch look and feel. I deliberately kept a balanced composition. I did apply the Tone Curve to the cracked concrete background to enhance the color depth.

I did all this in Corel PhotoPaint with Picasa 3.9 for browsing to the folders where I had the images of the background, and guitars.

Song Lyrics and Chords -Selections and Gel Layering in Painter 11

I started this experiment with a floral grunge wallpaper background opened in Painter 11. I selected a portion of the background to work with and pasted it as a new image. I found some faces of some young ladies and opened the files in Painter and used the selection lasso to cut out and paste into new layers, each face.

One of the faces is by Da Vinci from my collection of his drawings - Leda. The others are from WetCanvas forums galleries of photographs. I placed each face where I wanted them and used the Gel layer setting to add them to the grunge piece.

I decided it needed some poetry or lyrics done in my hand printing so I scanned in, using TWAIN Acquire, two pages of my song, "One Time I Am Laughing." It's a song about having conflicting feelings and is done in a Double Drop D tuning. If you look closely I even have chord charts drawn out for this song. I used the Gel layer setting again to allow the words and chords to show but not too much of the paper.

I merged all layers, Applied Surface Texture> Paper> (Italian Watercolor Paper adjusted to a light texture) and saved to a jpg file for placing on the web here. I then opened it in PhotoPaint to add a Filter Forge film frame. Resampling it to a workable size I saved it anew with less compression than usual.

Grunge Guitars - Baby Blue Texture - Paint.NET - PhotoPaint

Digital Collage with a Grunge flavor and Guitar motif is today's image. It is a return to one of my favorite motifs grunge guitars. I took a selection of a large texture file with baby blue paint and gray / white paint from Mayang's Textures. I opened it in PhotoPaint and using it as a background I applied the Tone Curve for depth, leaving the saturation alone for a change.

I opened a dual guitar photograph taken by myself, in Paint.NET. Here I applied the Effects> Artistic> Pencil Sketch filter using a larger pencil point for the sketch.

I copied this to the clipboard and pasted it into the background layer in PhotoPaint, using the object property Color Burn I merged it into the image. I then added a snippet of guitar chords and lyrics from my song "Better Left Unsaid." Also adding some paint splatters and drippings.

Using Filter Forge's Freepack 3 for film frames I first added blue borders and subsequent two film frames to the image.

Nonrepresentational Abstract - "Light" Photographs

I worked on this image from a view of making a non-
represent-
ational abstract piece. I started with some "Light" experimental photo-
graphs done by my son, Keir M. Gatzka. He used my DSLR and took photographs of moving traffic at night to produce them.

I created a collage of them using Picasa 3's collage feature and opened that file in PhotoPaint. There I applied Effects> Art Strokes> Conte Crayon> for a textured approach to the "Light" image. I did not adjust the saturation as the colors were dark and mysterious. It held a bit of rectangular feel from the photographs.

Using Filter Forge's Frames I added a Watercolor frame to the piece with a black 10 pixel border. Saving that file I determined that I wanted more texture to it so I opened it in Painter 8 and used Apply Surface Texture> Image Luminance>. Back in PhotoPaint I added my signature and resampled for display on the web.

Musically I found a chord progression for the song "What Are You Afraid Of?" and now am working on the melody and the bridge chords. It is fun to create music and I relish playing my 12-string guitar. I am experimenting with this song dropping the bass E string to D to give it a slightly different taste. I hope to have the song finished soon.

Irises - Lily pads - Rocks - Pond

Rushing to get a post in today. Here is a photograph I took that I applied a creative touch to. Using a similar workflow of my previous posts, I choose a different film frame for this image.

In Paint.NET I applied Curves and also upped the saturation for color and depth and a painterly filter, then using the Effects> Artistic> Ink Sketch> I turned up the color and lightened the ink lines.

I brought that file into Painter 8 to use the Apply Surface Texture> Image Luminance> for a bit of texture.

Using PhotoPaint I applied the black Film frame for a finished touch. Here I resampled the file for the web.

I have been working on a rewrite of my tune "She Let Me In," and a second song for this week "Smile Again." Both are a challenge to be sure. But I thoroughly enjoy the making of music. Both these songs are Country tunes, a little departure for me as I write mostly Folk/Rock songs. So it is a bigger challenge to make them not sound too much the same. Different lyrics, but similar chord progressions. I am using C F G in the one song and G D C in the other with some departure in the bridges.

All in all an enjoyable pastime.

White Lilies - Watercolor - Painter 8

We went on an outing to the local greenhouse here called, "WoJo's." I though I'd take my camera along and get some new photographs of flowers, though we went mostly for our vegetable garden. I found plenty of color and variety there.

These white lilies were among the photographs I really liked for doing a watercolor painting.

I first prepared the photograph by adjusting the Tone Curve in PhotoPaint. The shadows needed to be lightened. I saved that file.

Opening it in Paint.NET I applied one of the paint filter plugins which simplified the details somewhat and gave it a painterly appearance. I then saved again and opened it in Painter 8.

Once there I cloned the image and cleared it and turned on the Tracing Paper. From there I selected the Watercolor brushes and adjusted my opacity, diffusion, and varied the size of the Camel brush. I painted each petal individually and the white watercolor grayed somewhat, which was fine with me as I liked the result. I also painted the pistils and the one bud waiting to bloom.

I created a New Watercolor Layer and proceeded to paint the background keeping it light as much as I could for transparency and grain. I then went back to the original layer and selected the Digital Watercolors and added the yellow to the petals. I applied the soft cloner to the pistils for more detail, and blended with it as well. I saved that file.

Back in PhotoPaint I added the Filter Forge's Freepack 3 - Frames watercolor frame and also added some additional framing using Papersize with varying pixel width.

Last night I was working on a new song. Another broken relationship tune. I am not certain I like it as yet but am still working on it. I am using the chord progression of Em A for the verses, D G D A for the chorus, with a bridge of Dm7 Fmaj7 G7 Dm7 Fmaj7 G and turnaround back to Em A for the last verse. I recorded my first version in Audacity and saved it for my mp3 player.

Yellow Red Orchid - Watercolor - Painter 8

This image began as a pastel and pen sketch in one of my sketchbooks. I scanned it in at 300dpi for a fair size file. In PhotoPaint I selected the piece leaving out the fold of the sketchbook page. I saved that file and opening in Painter 8 I cloned it and cleared it and using the Tracing Paper I began to paint it using the Camel watercolor brush.

I used varying sizes of the brush and also the Flat brush for much of the background, focusing on the Orchid. Completing that I used the soft cloner to add back some detail of the pen lines and to boost color in places.

I saved the file again and reopened it in PhotoPaint where I added a watercolor frame using the Filter Forge's Freepack 3 - Frames. I added a small yellow mat to this using Image> Papersize> centering it and using 30 pixels setting.

I looked up some Blues guitar lessons and learned a bit of blues - chords - shuffle - turnaround, etc. It is a good site for learning guitar playing. I also participated in a chat with Mark Lincoln of the site which was informative and enjoyable. The sites monthly subscription starts at $19.95 a month. Which for what is made available in video lessons is reasonable.

My trial is just about up so I will try to get some more Blues lessons perhaps today. I may not be able to afford the subscription right now but I will book mark that site for future reference.

Return to Grunge Guitar Digital Collage

I was going over my files listed in Picasa 3 and came across this guitar image I did some time ago. In the very center is a photograph of my 12-string Seagull guitar, and it is surrounded with other guitar images.

I hadn't done a Grunge image in a while so I decided to revert back to that subject matter for this piece.

Using PhotoPaint I opened the guitar image first then found a floral wallpaper grunge texture file which I loaded into PhotoPaint as well. I went to the guitar image and copied it to the clipboard then I pasted and enlarged it to fit, into the grunge texture. I increased the saturation by 7 and that boosted the colors a bit.

I opened a chord progression text file in Notepad and copied a portion of that to the clipboard and pasted it as a text object into the image. I added some of the usual paint splatters to grunge it up somemore, I really like to do that as it adds that quality to the image.

I added a Grunge Frame from Filter Forge's Freepack - Frames to complete the effect.

Downtown Detroit, Michigan - Paint.NET - Painter 8

Downtown Detroit, Michigan is a picturesque Metropolitan area. It has many older buildings and great perspectives. This photograph was taken by my son Keir M. Gatzka.

I did little to the original photograph. I opened it in Paint.NET and applied the Effects> Artistic> Ink Sketch> filter with the color turned all the way up and the ink slightly down, for the ink sketch feel.

In Painter 8 I colored the gray sky with the Digital Watercolor coarse dry brush, a sky blue. And I added a bit of texture to the image.

In PhotoPaint I upped the saturation by 7 to increase the colors, and using the Tone Curve I deepened the shadows. I then applied Filter Forge's Freepack - Frames film frame to finish the image.

Musically I worked on another song yesterday. I am trying out a new program Verse Perfect [click here] which helps the writer with available rhyming and Thesaurus built right into the program. It's great for writing lyrics but does not give you any music ideas as far as chord progression or melody lines. I am still evaluating the software but it is a free download and I like what it does so far, I would recommend it for help with lyrics or poetry writing.

The new song rhymes well, sounds nice, to me anyway, but I fear it is another of my songwriting attempts that is elusive as to clear meanings. I tend to write poetry for lyrics, and they don't always tell a story or make a lot of sense. This one may fall into that category, you can be the judge.

John R and Woodward Ave - Pencil - Watercolor - Painter 8

Downtown Detroit, Michigan at the corner of John R and Woodward Ave in the evening. This photograph was taken by my son Keir M. Gatzka.

I opened the black and white photograph in Paint.NET to apply the Effects> Artistic> Pencil Sketch> filter for a pencil based image.

I then opened the file in Painter 8 and used the same Watercolor runny bleach brush as previous posts, in varying sizes. I selected the colors to show the bright lights in the windows and the darkened buildings.

I saved the large file and reopened in PhotoPaint to resize and adjust the Tone Curves to darken and deepen the shadows. These buildings are not decaying but are used everyday Downtown.

Last night I played the 12-string plugged into my Toneport and using the Gearbox software applied a Clean Guitar tone called "Like Heaven" to the following chord progression:

A Fuse Box - Grunge and Dynamic Auto-Painter Trial

gencies can keep one away from posting especially when you aren't anywhere where there is internet access. Let's just say that other things can become more important than a blog post.

This is an image I created on my laptop using Paint.NET, textures from CGTextures.com and some Paint.NET plugins.

It's a fuse box, a really old one I turned on it's side. I used Effects> Artistic> Ink Sketch on the image and also Curves to deepen the shadows. A bit of increased saturation brought out the rust and the yellow color and I added a layer of a red paint splash.

The original photograph was almost square and I did resize it for the web.

The second image is of a building photograph I used the Felt Tip filter on in MediaChance's Dynamic Auto-Painter Trial version (Click on the program name to go to their site.) The DAP automatically applies your chosen style to the Photograph and places a trial marking on it which I cropped out as it is very unsightly and spoils the effects you get from the auto painting features.

It was very interesting to watch the program auto paint using broad strokes and then moving into smaller strokes for details. You stop it where you like the results. It is not for everyone but the results are amazing as you can see.

While I was away I did have a chance to jam with a Nam Veteran. He played his 12-string and I accompanied him on his 6-string. He knew a lot of old tunes and said that I did a good job of "filling in the cracks" with my improvised leads. A lot of C G D songs and E A B7 songs too. It was obvious that he had seen a lot of action in Nam and had paid a price for his efforts. A very intense sort of guy with a lot of heart. The jam was good.
