Bonamassa and Friends - Slow Train Acoustic

"Bonamassa and Friends - Slow Train Acoustic," is from a screen capture I took watching a video of the performance. I opened in Picasa 3+ and used the Pencil Sketch tool on the image. Saving that I opened the black and white piece in Painter Essentials 5.

I Hand Painted on the Canvas Layer using the color palette in Essentials. Brushes used were the Chalk and the Diffuse Water Brushes set at varying small sizes and Opacity. I painted each Individual with my choice of colors and the same for the Lighting.

I saved that and then created a second layer, filling it with a Light Gray color. I used the property Multiply on that layer for transparency. Then I dropped all layers and saved the Large file again.

Next I opened the file in PhotoPaint and Hand Painted more of the background, using the eyedropper to select colors. I used the Light Turin Cover Brush to hand paint. All color choices were mine, not from the original screen capture. I used the Tone Curve for depth to the colors and increased the Saturation by 15 for a punchy view. I saved this iteration.

As Picasa was still open, I used the Museum Matte for the matte and framing, saved again. In PhotoPaint I added my signature layer, sized and placed it using the property Add for transparency. and I saved the Large piece again.

I resampled the file in PhotoPaint for display at 96dpi, 75 compression, 25 smoothing, saved as a JPG. Be certain to click on the image for the Larger view of all the details and textures! Thanks!

"Beard and Cowboy Hat" Corel Painter

Beard and Cowboy Hat

I chose this photograph of a Mans Portrait with a "Beard and Cowboy Hat." I thought that it would be a challenge to paint digitally. It was a color photograph I opened it in Corel PSP Pro X3 and converted it to grayscale.

Saving that I opened in Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4 and used the Watercolor Sketch with a Dry Brush. I saved that iteration and opened in Corel Painter 11.

I used Digital Watercolor Brushes, Chalk, Crayon, Gouache as well. Using my Wacom tablet, I painted it selecting flesh toned colors and browns for the hat and shirt with black and purple for the leather jacket.

Butterfly Floral

I browsed my Dover Publications clip art folder in Picasa 3.9 and found this piece. Two Butterflies on a Floral. I opened with Corel PSP Pro X3 and resized to 150.0 dpi for a larger file to work on. I applied the Art Effect Pencil for a simplified version of the image.

Saving that file I used Corel PhotoPaint to increase the saturation by 7. I saved again and opened with Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4. There I selected to auto-paint with the Chalk using a grainy chalk brush. This gave me a nice light brown background and an interesting chalk drawing of the image.

I wanted more color to show so I selected the Watercolor Sketch auto-paint and used more intense colors. It painted only the Butterflies and Floral and did not touch the background chalk drawing. I saved that file as an iterative save.

I reopened with PSP and added my signature with the Visible Watermark and also the gold frame. I resized for display here.

"Watercolor Portrait" Corel Painter 11

Found in browsing with Picasa 3.9, a digital pencil sketch of a young woman. I opened Corel Painter 11 and was working on creating a new workspace. I created some new Texture papers using some textures from Flaming Pear saving them in a new library.

I opened a new 8" x 10" 300dpi canvas and using the Chalk brush I painted the entire canvas with textures in very light browns and yellows, ochre really. I saved that file and using copy and paste I opened the pencil sketch on it's own layer. I used the resizing tool to make her fit the large canvas and committed the transformation.

Using differing watercolor brushes I painted the young lady portrait. I altered opacity and selected each brush as I went along. I kept some of the sketch showing through for small details, especially in the eyes, where I used a Tint brush for the eye color.

I did use the Tint brushes quite a bit as well for the painting. If I remember correctly the pencil sketch was created digitally also in Paint.NET, quite a while ago.

My son and I have been discussing portraiture recently. He is going to try to develop his drawing skills with traditional pencil drawings and I, of course, will be working digitally. This is my first attempt within this discussion.

"Favorite Book" Corel Painter 11 - PhotoPaint

Favorite Book

Today I felt like digital painting so I opened a photograph of my Grandson and his "Favorite Book," in Corel Painter 11. I quick cloned it with a white background and began painting in Gouache. I painted his head, face and body with it and then switched to a large Chalk. I used texture with the Chalk brush for the background.

I also used the Soft Cloner for some detail in his face. Then I used a Digital Watercolor brush and painted in some flesh tones, and a touch of color in the background. I selected a thin Pastel chalk brush and added the lines for definition.

I adjusted the texture with Image Luminance, and upped the saturation to boost the colors. I also decreased the value for some depth. I cropped the image to show only him and his book. Then saved the large file.

I opened it in PhotoPaint and added my signature, saved again then resampled for display here, saving that iteration. I opened the file in Picasa 3 and viewed the full screen image. I like the image so I am sharing it for your enjoyment.

"Beautiful Face" - Corel PSP Pro X3 - Painter 11 - PhotoPaint - Filter Forge

Beautiful Face

This is a repaint of a painting I did some time ago. I opened it from it's folder in Picasa 3 with PSP Pro X3. I altered it's Vibrancy and saturation. I also applied the Brushstrokes feature for some texture.  I saved that large file and opened with Painter 11, cloning it to paint.

There I applied some more coarse texture using the Chalk brush at varying sizes. I highlighted the hair and facial features. I used Apply Surface Texture Image Luminance. This gave me even more texture.

I then saved that iteration and opened with PhotoPaint. I applied a slight touch of Tone Curve. Using Filter Forge frames I used a simple frame. I applied the wand tool to the larger portion of the frame and used the 3D Bevel effect with a blue texture, enhancing the frame. I added my signature to complete the image.

I saved the large file, then resampled for the web.

A Journey Called Collage - Lesson #4 - Corel Painter 11

My taking the course A Journey Called Collage at Digital Art Academy afforded me a chance to learn more of the functions of Corel Painter 11. I thoroughly enjoyed this self-paced class and was rewarded with new knowledge.

I selected to do a Self-portrait collage as my final piece and that is what I am displaying today. I used many layers and textures for this piece in Painter. I also used composite ways to place the images in place.

Since I am a guitar player the guitar was included as a backdrop and in the images used. If you want to know the techniques, you'll have to take the class!

We lost my boyhood images in a fire so I used images from 1969, the year I graduated from High School which is far back enough, and more recent photographs.

Shoes or the Basket Ball? Shoes! - Painter 11 - PhotoPaint

Today's image is from my time spent with my Grandson on the floor with my camera. He was playing for a time with his soccer ball and basketball and got a hold of his Mother's shoes. He began to play with them.

On the floor with him I took the photograph of him playing with the shoes. I opened the image in Painter 11 and did a muck up using a quick clone with an ocher background, Auto cloning differing brushes, the Impressionist, and Van Gogh.

I used many differing brushes to paint / clone with, Textured Acrylics, Camel oils, and some of the Distortion brushes in the background. I wanted to use color to pull the image a bit more together so I chose a couple of Sponge brushes and Digital Watercolors to add the basketball orange.

I brought the large file into PhotoPaint to add a Filter Forge frame and adjusted the Tone Curve to give some depth, also increasing the saturation for boosting the colors.

Grandson - Portrait - Painter 11 - PhotoPaint

Recently I sat with my Grandson and took about 50+ photographs, couldn't help myself. Here is one where he is enjoying a bit of banana. I prepped the photograph in PhotoPaint by first cropping then using the copy to clipboard. I pasted as new image from the clipboard.

I proceeded to apply the Effects> Art Strokes> Charcoal>. I then added back, by pasting, the color photograph and used an object property for transparency. I merged the two. I saved this file and opened it in Painter 11.

There I did a quick clone with a light ocher background and selected the chalk cloner brush. I painted all of his face and hand and shirt with this brush. Remember it had a charcoal like appearance from my prep. I selected the Splattery cloner brush and did the background.

I also selected the Van Gogh cloner and painted some of the shading with that brush. I added back in some details with the Soft and Straight cloner brushes.

Back in PhotoPaint I added black and red borders and resampled the image for sharing here.

Painter Wow! Book Brushes - Watercolor - Chalk - Liquid Ink - Ezekiel in Hat

I really like this photo-
graph of my Grandson Zeke with his hat on crooked. So I decided to paint it digitally. I used the following:

Painter 8
Wow! Book brushes, acrylics, building brushes
Chalk
Liquid Ink
Watercolor (not necessarily in order of appearance.)

I was going for a new look and feel to doing portraits and I love the wide variety of brushes in Painter. I wanted a loose feel but striking colors and style. Chalk and Liquid Ink brushes lent to that effort.

I used PhotoPaint only to crop the photograph, and add borders to frame the piece. All the painting from the reference photograph was done in Painter.

In Painter I did a muck up with Watercolor brushes. Switched to the Wow! Book brushes and painted in details. Added color with the Chalk brushes and the Liquid Ink brushes.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this piece.

Grandson in Autumn Colors - Painter 8 - PhotoPaint

Visiting with my Grandson always garners me a few nice photo-
graphs of him. I really enjoyed my time spent in Painter 8 doing a painting based upon one of the photographs I took yesterday.

I used the Chalk Tapered Chalk brushes for the muck up of the image. I varied the size of the brushes and completed that. I then switched to the Soft Cloner brush for detail of the eyes, nose, mouth, etc.

I opened a new Watercolor layer and used differing watercolor brushes for the background with light to dark bringing in the browns and oranges from the shirt and hair. I also used the straight cloner brush for the monkey and some other details on his arms and hands, fingers.

I liked the angle he was sitting in, in this photograph so I selected this one to paint and portray Autumn colors. I also used PhotoPaint and Filter Forge's watercolor frame with a light orange tint. Here is Zeke.

Two Experiments - A Nebula - Pastel Floral

I recently was on the Hubble Telescope site [click here] and was admiring the color photo-
graphs there. I then was working with Apophysis the fractal generator and I created a fractal that looked like the Nebulae I saw on that site.

Doing a print screen I opened it in PhotoPaint and using the Clone tool I created this fractal Nebula. Adding a couple of star like Lens Flares from KPT's Collection I emphasized the other worldliness of the image. It was an enjoyable experiment in fractal imaging and the use of cloning. I really liked the palette of the fractal as well.

I haven't done much painting lately so I fired up Painter 8 and decided to do a floral piece in chalk and pastels with a bit of corrugated texture and watercolor.

I started from scratch thinking about our reddish June lilies which I then did using the chalk and pastels. I added some watercolors to the background and framed the image using Filter Forge's Freepack 3 - Frames.

Contemporary Building - Chalk - Painter 8

This image is from a photograph by my son Keir M. Gatzka, in the Detroit Metro area. It's a more contemporary building stylistically than the decayed buildings I have posted earlier.

Using Picasa 3 I searched for "build" in the search bar and found a number of photographs taken by my son. I right clicked on it and opened it in Painter 8. I cloned the image and selected all and cleared the digital canvas, then selected none.

I used Ctrl T to turn on the tracing paper and chose the chalk cloner brush to begin painting this piece. I followed the lines of the architecture with varying sizes in the brush to allow for the perspective to show through.

It is basically a clone but all the brushstrokes are mine.
